Orthopedic Foundation For Animals Eye Exams with Bright Light Veterinary Eye Care

OFA EYE EXAMS

Overview

The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) runs the Companion Animal Eye Registry formerly known as CERF. The purpose of OFA eye exams is to provide breeders of dogs with information about genetic eye diseases in order to produce the healthiest possible dogs. Yearly examinations are recommended. Only board-certified veterinary ophthalmologists like Dr. Amber Labelle can perform OFA eye exams.

An OFA eye exam is a screening exam. If painful or vision threatening abnormalities are identified during the exam, Dr. Labelle will recommend a comprehensive ocular exam. To register your dog(s) for an OFA eye exam, please call City View Animal Hospital at (613) 727-6696.  A referral from your primary care veterinarian is not required.

Dr. Labelle is available for OFA eye exams at regional events, including dog shows, breed club gatherings, and other public events. To inquire about booking Dr. Labelle for your event, please email hello@brightlightvet.ca or call/text 613-218-1483.

What to Expect

The OFA has moved to an online platform for registering for and logging the results of OFA eye exams. Prior to your dog’s exam, you need to complete the online registration at https://www.ofa.org/online. You can view a step-by-step guide to creating an account and registering here.

Dr. Labelle will enter your dog’s exam results directly into the online form. You will receive an email from OFA with a digital copy of the completed form. After the exam, you can submit your dog’s results to OFA and pay the OFA fees online.

Eye drops will be administered to the dog prior to the examination to dilate the pupils as required by the OFA. Dilation of the pupils will last for several hours, but is not painful for the dog. Access to shade should be provided after the exam until the pupils are no longer dilated. Dr. Labelle will perform the OFA eye exam approximately 20 minutes after the dilating drops have been administered, and will examine both the front and the back of the eye. The examination itself takes approximately 10 minutes (complete with lots of treats and cuddling! You can view a video of what a complete eye exam with Dr. Labelle looks like here.
